NURTURE PROVISION AT ST MARK'S

The Nurture Provision at St Marks CE Primary School was introduced to ensure that the needs of all learners were met throughout their educational journey. Not all children are ready to meet the social and intellectual demands of school life. Research shows that a child is able to learn best when they have strong self-esteem, a sense of belonging and resilience. Nurture groups offer a short-term focused intervention which addresses barriers to learning arising from social or emotional difficulties. Nurture groups were originally developed in 1969 by educational psychologist Marjorie Boxall, who famously said: “If the child is unable to adjust to the needs of the school, then the school must adjust to meet the needs of the child.”

It was recognised, by senior leaders and other staff members, that some students needed alternative sessions with a focus on social and emotional literacy. The idea of the Nurture provision came from a desire to be able to fully meet these student’s needs, whilst maintaining the high aspiration and fulfilment of potential that we have for all students.

Our Nurture provision works with children across the school to reach the following objectives:

·         Improve and promote accessibility to their learning and improve attainment

·         Support students’ self-esteem, resilience and self-confidence

·         Improve social skills and team work skills

·         Provide the tools for emotional regulation and positive communication

·         Meet the needs of and improve mental health

·         Build strong friendships between peers

·         Give children the opportunity for reflection, deeper discussion and tailored support
